Hockely Valley was one of the first small settlements in Dufferin County over 150 years ago. It was a rest stop with a tavern and hotel established by John McFarlane. The hills provided shelter from the wind and elements in the valley and the river provided fish, fresh water and path to follow when the land was too wild. Even the Jesuits stopped here in the 1600s guided by their Indigenous scouts. Fast forward to today…a winery, ski hill, community hall and general store make the perfect back drop for a hit TV show….now if only the river was actually called, Schitt’s Creek.
